PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has taken the right path in leading processes towards the launch of the Gukurahundi public hearings, as this will bring closure to the sensitive issue and foster national unity, ZANU PF’s Secretary for Information and Publicity Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa has said.
Speaking at a press briefing in Harare yesterday, Cde Mutsvangwa said the President had started the year by prioritising unity.
“He (the President) is making sure that never again will this happen to our society. It demonstrates his sincerity; that is, leaving no one and no place behind.”
Cde Mutsvangwa urged people to desist from using historical grievances to foment disunity.
“We yank away from the chapters that tendency of trying to use historical grievances to continue to foment present differences. We have no reason to use the history of our past as a driver of disunity, of vindictive settling of scores and of relentlessly trying to seek revenge.
“If you do that, you always are looking through the rear-view mirror, you are not watching through the windshield as to where you are going,” he said.
Cde Mutsvangwa spoke after President Mnangagwa on Friday met traditional chiefs from the Matabeleland region at State House in Bulawayo to continue processes to address Gukurahundi.
Cde Mutsvangwa said Zimbabwe ranks among the highest in the world in terms of the racial tolerance index.
“People here don’t look at your colour when you are getting married, they don’t look at your colour when you are going to church, they don’t look at your colour when you are going to school. We just look at you as a human being.
“So this has done a lot to make our white population feel that they are part of the new Zimbabwe, where the President says no one will be left behind,” he said.
President Mnangagwa, he added, has made it possible to make Zimbabwe a global economy that embraces all races.
“And we see it with the collaboration which is going on in our agricultural revival. It takes full advantage of their historical knowledge about farming, about mining, about many other things, which made the colonial economy be what it was before.
“But the President is taking it to another level, this economy,” he said.
“What he is doing is, he is shedding off the skin of the colonial economy and making it a global economy, because that’s what Zimbabwe deserves, a full global economy.
“And when it is a full global economy, it requires every citizen, regardless, to put his shoulder to the wheel.
“So that’s what the President is doing by the Global Compensation Agreement.”
Cde Mutsvangwa also took the opportunity to thank former ZBC and Zimpapers board chairpersons for the work they did during their tenure.
