Zimbabwe is currently experiencing strong growth in beef production after the country recorded a 13 percent increase in the number of cattle slaughtered in the 12-month period to September 2023, a Cabinet Minister said.

Speaking to delegates at the ZANU PF conference in Gweru over the weekend, Finance, Investment Promotion and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube said, “This upward trend is attributed to a significant rise in cattle slaughter, with a total of 339 000 cattle being processed during the year, compared to 299 000 in the previous year”.

Over the years, the Government has increased support to the sector in recognition of its importance in driving economic growth and development.

Consequently, the Government embarked on several initiatives to support the industry’s growth including through investing in disease control, infrastructure development, and facilitating market access for beef producers.

Additionally, the exploration of international trade agreements and partnerships is expected to further expand beef exports, especially into markets across Southern Africa and Europe.

Zimbabwean farmers have also been embracing improved livestock management practices, resulting in enhanced cattle growth and overall health, while the Government’s proactive measures to control livestock diseases, particularly Foot and Mouth, have led to healthier cattle populations.

“It is my humble submission to you that substantial investments have been made in upgrading abattoirs, transportation, and storage facilities, which have streamlined the processing and distribution of beef,” the minister said.

Also aiding this growth has been the rising international demand for Zimbabwean beef, which has motivated producers to ramp up their production levels, aiming to capture a larger share of the global market.

Economist Dr Prosper Chitambara said the surge in beef production represented substantial economic implications for the country.

“With the increasing global demand for high-quality beef, Zimbabwe is well-positioned to expand its beef exports, which can significantly bolster foreign exchange earnings and support the nation’s balance of payments.

“Also the industry’s growth has created additional job opportunities in cattle farming, meat processing, and related sectors, contributing to the reduction of unemployment rates,” said Dr. Chitambara.

Minister Ncube added that the higher beef production ensures a stable and secure meat supply for domestic consumption, playing a crucial role in maintaining Zimbabwe’s food security and helping to manage inflation as prices become steady.

Other analysts said the expansion of the beef industry would benefit the country’s rural communities by providing a more lucrative source of income and a means to improve living standards. While the surge in beef production is undoubtedly positive news, the industry is not without its challenges that need to be addressed for sustained growth. The Government has been urged to ensure the quality and safety of beef products, maintain high-level disease control measures, and address environmental and sustainability concerns associated with cattle farming.
